Ethiopia has been deemed as one of the most violent places in the world ranking 139th out of 162 countries in the world, the latest annual ranking of Global Peace Index, reported.
The report said violence costs Ethiopia US$ 6,800,000,000 annually. Eritrea, Ethiopia’s northern neighbor that is now in a no-war no-peace situation with Ethiopia, has been ranked 124th. Kenya has been ranked 132.
In terms of Terrorism Index, Ethiopia has been ranked 37th out of 157 countries. Iraq stood number one while
Iceland continues to top the list as the world’s most peaceful place. However, Syria has replaced Afghanistan as the most violent place.
It estimated the impact of violence on global economy at $ 9.8 trillion or 11.3 per cent of world GDP in 2013, an increase of $ 179 billion from the previous year.
The result of this year’s report says that the top three most peaceful countries are Iceland, Denmark and Austria. Small and stable democracies make up the top ten most peaceful countries. New Zealand, Canada and Japan are the only non-European countries in the top ten.
The three least peaceful countries are South Sudan, Afghanistan and Syria. Levels of peace in South Sudan deteriorated the most since 2013, falling 16 places from last year.
It also said the ten countries most likely to deteriorate in peace in the next two years areZambia, Haiti, Argentina, Chad, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Nepal, Burundi,Georgia, Liberia and Qatar.
The GPI is the world’s leading measure of global peacefulness produced by the IEP. It gauges on-going domestic and international conflict, safety and security in society, and militarisation in 162 countries by taking into account 22 indicators.
