Security forces killed a student in Mendi, west Wellega, Oromo region
of Ethiopia on Monday as residents were preparing to celebrate Meskal,
the finding of the true cross.
Lideta Imana was killed by a sniper after he left home to join the
celebration at a bonfire ceremony on the eve of Maskal on Monday. Lideta is the fifth person to
be killed since the transfer of power last week in the Oromo region. The
regime replaced the leaders of the Oromo People’s Democratic
Organization last week with two individuals, Lema Megersa and Workineh
Gebeyehu, who have ties to the intelligence and security of the regime.
Mamo Garene in West Arsi, Yifa Adisu in Nekemt, Eyasu Solomon in Tejo
and Mohammed Abdella Ousman in Somali region were killed in just one
week alone.
The funeral of Lideta was conducted on Tuesday in
the town of Mendi. Angry residents came out for the funeral, shutting
down the town on Tuesday.
The protest in the Oromo region of Ethiopia is nearing one year with the killings still continuing unabated. It is estimated that over one thousand peaceful civilians were reportedly killed by security forces in the Oromo region alone.
The protest against the tyrannical regime in Ethiopia had spread to the
Amhara region this summer where at least 200 people were reportedly
killed in two months of protests. Tens of thousands of people
were also incarcerated in various prisons and secrete locations all over
the country without due process.
