Message from Bekele Nega, OFC’s General Secretary who was placed under house arrest

Dear All,

Ato Bekele NegaThis morning, on my way to work, 4 men in civilian clothes greeted me by my name; identified themselves as ‘police’ and asked me to get in a car parked next to where they stopped me. When I refused, they grabbed me by my arms left and right; forced me into the backseat of their car and started driving. Once the car started moving, they started to hit me: the two guys in my left and right continued to punch me while the one sitting in the front-seat kept touching my face with his gun.

While they were hitting me, they kept saying that they were doing this because I was talking to the media despite their warnings not to do so. After they stopped the beating, they took away my phone at gun point and threatened that I do as they say or they would come for me and my family. They told me that not only mine but also my family’s lives were in danger: “If you step out of your house or talk to any media, you will take responsibility for what may happen to you or your children” (“ከዛሬ ጀምሮ ከቤትህ ብትወጣ ወይ ሚዲያ ብታናግር በአንተም ሆነ በቤተሰቦችህ ላይ ለሚሆነው ነገር ሃላፊነቱ ያንተ ነው”). Before they let me go, they also made it clear that they would resort to killing if I don’t do as they say “we no longer have a place to keep you, if you don’t do as you’re told killing you or paralyzing you is what is left to do.” (“ከእንግዲህ ወዲህ እናንተን የምናስርበት ቦታ የለንም:: ወይ እንገድልሃለን ወይ በመኪና ገጭተን ፓራላይዝ እናደርግሃለን ”)

The Ethiopian government has turned deaf ears to the many peaceful pleas to stop the violent crackdown all over Oromia, and continues to intimidate, arrest and kill citizens with no accountability. More than 4,000 of our party’s members including Bekele Gerba, Dejene Tafa, Addisu Bulala, and Desta Dinka are currently imprisoned incommunicado. It is my hope that the government and those who are silently watching understand that arresting and killing of innocent individuals has never silenced Oromos and will never be a solution to a legitimate demand of millions, and move quickly to rectify this situation. Until then, I, as an individual and member of OFC, will continue to peacefully voice the concerns of the Oromo people, because the peaceful struggle for the freedom and dignity of our people is a cause that millions of Oromos including me are prepared to sacrifice our lives for.

ዛሬ ማለዳ ወደ ስራ እያመራሁ ሲቪል የለበሱ 4 ሰዎች ስሜን ጠርተው ሰላምታ ካቀረቡልኝ በኋላ ፖሊሶች መሆናቸውን ነግረውኝ እኔን ካስቆሙበት ቦታ አጠገብ ወደሚገኘው መኪናቸው እንድገባ ጠየቁኝ።ፈቃደኛ አለመሆኔን ስነግራቸውም እጆቼን ይዘው እየጎተቱኝ በመኪናቸው የኋላ መቀመጫ ላይ እንድቀመጥ አድርገውኝ መንዳት ጀመሩ ።


መኪናው መንቀሳቀስ እንደጀመረም መማታት ጀመሩ ፣በቀኝና በግራዬ የተቀመጡት ሁለት ሰዎች ሲደበድቡኝ ጋቢና የተቀመጠው ወደኋላ ዞሮ በመሳሪያው ፊቴን ይነካ ነበር ።


እየደበደቡኝ ይህንን የሚያደርጉት ማስጠንቀቂያቸውን ችላ ብዬ ለሚዲያ መረጃ በመስጠቴ እንደሆነ ይነግሩኝ ነበር ።ድብደባቸውን እንዳቆሙም መሳሪቸውን እንደደገኑ ስልኬን ወሰዱብኝ ።የሚሉኝን ካላደረግኩም ለእኔና ለቤተሰቦቼ እንደሚመጡ አስፈራርተውኛል።
“ከዛሬ ጀምሮ ከቤትህ ብትወጣ ወይ ሚዲያ ብታናግር በአንተም ሆነ በቤተሰቦችህ ላይ ለሚሆነው ነገር ሃላፊነቱ ያንተ ነው” ብለውኛል ።


የእኔ ብቻ ሳይሆን የቤተሰቦቼ ህይወት አደጋ ውስጥ እንደሆነ በመንገርም ከመልቀቃቸው በፊት የሚሉኝን ካላደረኩ እንደሚገሉኝ ዝተውብኛል።
“ከእንግዲህ ወዲህ እናንተን የምናስርበት ቦታ የለንም:: ወይ እንገድልሃለን ወይ በመኪና ገጭተን ፓራላይዝ እናደርግሃለን ”ብለውኛል።


የኢትዮጵያ መንግስት በኦሮሚያ ክልል ብዙዎች እያቀረቡለት ለሚገኘው አቤቱታ ጆሮውን ደፍኖ ሰላማዊውን ጥያቄ በኃይል ለማፈን እየሰራ በመሆኑ ያለምንም ኃላፊነት ዜጎችን እያሰረ፣እያዋረደና እየገደለ ይገኛል ። 


በቀለ ገርባ፣ ደጀን ጣፋ፣ አዲሱ ቡላላና ደስታ ዲንቃን ጨምሮ 4.000 የሚደርሱ የፓርቲያችን አባላት በግፍ ታስረዋል ።
መንግስትና ሁኔታውን በፀጥታ እየተመለከቱ የሚገኙ አካላት ንፁሃንን ማሰርና መግደል የሚልዮኖችን ህጋዊ ጥያቄ ለማፈን መፍትሔ እንደማይሆንና ኦሮሞውንም ይህ ድርጊት እንደማያስቆመው ይገነዘባሉ ብዬ ተስፋ አደርጋለሁ ።


እስከዛው ግን እንደግለሰብና እንደ ኦፌኮ አባልነቴ በሰላማዊ አግባብ የኦሮሞ ህዝብ አንደበት መሆኔን እቀጥላለሁ ።ምክንያቱም ለነፃነትና ለህዝባችን ክብር ስንል በምንከተለው ሰላማዊ ትግል እኔና ሚልዮን ኦሮሞዎች ህይወታችንን ጭምር ለመክፈል ተዘጋጅተናል ።

Ethiopia detains four thousand ant-government protesters, death toll reaches 122

In what is being seen as one of the largest mass arrests in the nation, Ethiopian authorities continue to round up people in the country’s Oromia region as anti-government protest entered its second month. Several students were reportedly arrested following a renewed protest against the Integrated Master Plan in various parts of the Oromia region. The Horn of Africa Human Rights Council in its report today put the death toll at 122 since the protest started a month ago.

According to the Oromia Federalist Congress (OFC), the number of those arrested in the last four weeks have reached 4000. Secretary of OFC, Bekele Nege’a told local reporters that about 500 of those detained were members of his party. He said about 1,500 people have also sustained injuries inflicted by government forces.  Bekele also called on authorities to refrain from use of brutal force against peaceful protesters and instead resolve the issue through dialogue.

Similarly, Semayawi Party (the Blue Party) said today that several members of the party have been arrested and others roughed up by the regime’s security forces.

In a similar development, the federal police forces entered the campus of Ambo University and have beaten and arrested several students. Sources told ESAT that police also detained students who were being treated for injuries at the town’s hospital.

The European Union meanwhile held talks with the Ethiopian authorities and urged the regime to resolve the crises through dialogue. It also called on the respect of the rule of law. The EU, in a statement issued from Brussels, also called on the peaceful resolution of the crises in Ethiopia’s Oromia region.

ፋና ወጊና የነቁ ዜጎች የእሳት ራት እየሆኑ ነው ያለው ሰማያዊ፣ ‹‹አርዓያዎቻችንን እያስበላን ዝም ማለታችን አገዛዙ እድሜውን ለማራዘም›› ተጠቅሞበታል ሲል ገልጾዋል፡፡ መንግስት ተጠያቂነት በጎደለው ሁኔታ የፓርቲ አባላትንና አመራሮችን፣ ጋዜጠኞችንና ንቁ ዜጎችን በጅምላ እያሰረ መሆኑን ፓርቲው በመግለጫው አስታውሷል፡፡

በሌላ በኩል የሐገር ድንበርንና ሉዓላዊነትን የሚጠብቁ ዜጎችን መንግስት ‹‹ሽፍቶች›› ሲል መጥራቱ ታሪካዊ የክህደት ምስክርነት በገዛ ዜጋ ላይ መስጠት ነው ሲል ሰማያዊ ፓርቲ በመግለጫው አውግዟል፡፡

ኦፌኮ ከፍተኛ አመራሮችን ጨምሮ ከ500 በላይ አባላት ታስረውብኛል፣ ግጭቱን ተከትሎ እስከ 4ሺ ሰዎች ታስረዋል አለ

የወረዳ አመራሮችና ባለፈው ግንቦት በምርጫ የተሳተፉ ግለሰቦችን ጨምሮ እስከ 500 የሚደርሱ የፓርቲው አባላት በተለያዩ አካባቢዎች መታሠራቸውን አቶ በቀለ ገልፀው፤ ፓርቲው ባለው መረጃ መሰረት በአጠቃላይ ተቃውሞውን ተከትሎ የታሠረው ሰው ብዛት እስከ 4ሺ ይደርሳል ብለዋል፡፡


ከ300 በላይ የደረሱበት ያልታወቁ ሰዎች እንዳሉ የተናገሩት ዋና ፀሐፊው፤ በግጭቱ የቆሰሉ ከ1500 በላይ ተጎጂዎች በወሊሶ ሉቃስ ሆስፒታል፣ በቅዱስ ጳውሎስ ሆስፒታል፣ በሚኒልክና በጥቁር አንበሳ ሆስፒታል ህክምናቸውን እየተከታተሉ እንደሚገኙ ገልፀዋል

Ethiopian opposition urges scrutiny of industrial plan

The international community needs to pressure the Ethiopian government to halt land grabs and respect human rights, an opposition party leader has said after two prominent opposition members were arrested for inciting protests in Oromiya earlier this week.

Oromiya is the largest region in Ethiopia. Groups such as the OLF, accuse the ruling Ethiopian People’s Revolutionary Democratic Front (EPRDF) coalition of marginalising ethnic Oromos.
Bekele Nega, secretary of the Oromo Federalist Congress (OFC), said security forces have killed at least 86 people since protests began earlier this month over government plans to create an investment and industrial zone near the capital, Addis Ababa.

“They have killed 86 and wounded thousands [and are] imprisoning people and political leaders including our vice-chairman Bekele Gerba,” Nega told Al Jazeera.

Merara Gudina, OFC chairman, said police detained Gerba on Friday and the party’s assistant secretary, Dejene Tafa, a day earlier.

“They suspect that our party and some of our members are part of the protest movement, that we have been inciting the demonstrations,” he told Reuters news agency, denying that the OFC had incited violence.

“We do not know when Bekele and Dejene will be released or be charged for anything.”

Opposition leaders and activists said the “Addis Ababa Integrated Development Master Plan” designed to merge certain rural areas into Addis Ababa will result in land grabs and the displacement of farmers.

Hailemariam Desalegn, Ethiopia’s prime minister, told parliament on Friday that people had a legitimate right to oppose Addis Ababa’s plan, but that the government would take “unflinching measures” against those who incite violence.

Hailemariam said “anti-peace forces” had incited violence by spreading false information about the plan.
The government has accused the secessionist Oromo Liberation Front (OLF) and opposition group Ginbot 7 of involvement in the protests. Both organisations are regarded by the state as terrorist entities.

Amnesty International, the human rights monitor, said earlier in December that protesters have been labelled “terrorists” by Ethiopian authorities “in an attempt to violently suppress protests against potential land seizures”.

The Ethiopian government has neither released an official death toll nor confirmed how many people were arrested since the protests started.

‘Impartial investigation’
Betsate Deneke, the head of the the Human Rights Council (HRCO), said his organisation was currently collecting information on how many were killed and would announce their findings next week.

He told Al Jazeera that HRCO demanded an “impartial investigation into the killings of people” takes place.

Earlier this week, the opposition said the government had rejected, for the second time, an application to hold a public demonstration on December 27 to protest against the Addis Ababa Master Plan.
Four out of five Ethiopians still live in rural areas even though the country has witnessed tremendous growth over the past 10 years.

Ethiopia has also faced significant criticizim for forcibly removing tens of thousands of people from their homes to make way for large scale commercial ventures, often to the benefit of foreign investors.

Ethiopian opposition figures arrested over land protests

Ethiopian police have arrested two senior opposition members on suspicion of inciting weeks of protests against government plans to set up a new economic zone near the capital that would displace farmers, their party leader said on Friday.

The Oromo Federalist Congress (OFC) says 87 protesters have been killed by police since demonstrations broke out this month in Oromiya region, in the country’s worst civil unrest for a decade.

On Dec. 15, a government spokesman said police had a list of five people who had died during the protests, but casualties could be higher. Officials have yet to announce an updated number.
OFC chairman Merara Gudina said police rounded up his deputy Bekele Gerba and the party’s assistant secretary Dejene Tafa on Thursday, and both remained in custody.

“They suspect that our party and some of our members are part of the protest movement, that we have been inciting the demonstrations,” he told Reuters, denying that the OFC had incited violence. “We do not know when Bekele and Dejene will be released or be charged for anything.”

Government officials were not immediately available for comment, but Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn told parliament on Friday that “anti-peace forces” had incited violence by spreading false information about the so-called “Addis Ababa Integrated Development Master Plan” to create an investment and industrial zone near the capital.

He said members of “terrorist groups” had infiltrated protesters and that the government would take “unflinching measures” against them.

Addis Ababa has accused the secessionist Oromo Liberation Front (OLF) and opposition group Ginbot 7 of involvement in the protests. It labels both groups as terrorist organizations.

Oromiya is Ethiopia’s largest region by size and population. Dissident groups such as the OLF, which is waging a low-key rebellion, accuse the ruling EPRDF coalition of marginalizing ethnic Oromos.

The second most populous nation in Africa with 90 million people, Ethiopia has long been one of the poorest countries in the world per capita, but has made startling strides toward industrialization, recording some of the continent’s strongest economic growth rates for a decade. But reallocating land for new uses is a thorny issue in a country where the vast majority of the population still survives on smallholder farm plots. The opposition says farmers have often been forced off land and poorly compensated.

Ethiopia continues jailing journalists

Getachew Shiferaw, editor-in-chief of Negere Ethiopia is arrested this morning. Negere Ethiopia is Blue party’s newspaper suspended from printing house last year but continued online.

The reason for the arrest of Getachew is not known yet.

Ethiopian government once again running after journalists. The Federal court also called Zone Nine bloggers to appear on December 30, 2015.

Meanwhile Court grants the police twenty eight days in the case against journalist Getachew Shiferaw and four Blue party members , Detainees to be charged with Ethiopia’s infamous Anti-Terrorism proclamation.

A court in Addis Abeba has yesturday granted the police investigating the case of Getachew and three members of Blue party 28 more days to further investigate detainees.

According to the party’s online publication Negere Ethiopia, police suspects the detainees inciting violence through the social media and recruiting for Genbot 7, an opposition party in arm struggle.

ፍርድ ቤቱ ግን ፖሊስ የጠየቀውን 28 ቀናት የምርመራ ጊዜ ቀጠሮ በመፍቀድ ለጥር 14/2008 ዓ.ም ቀጠሮ ሰጥቷል፡፡ በተመሳሳይ ከሁለት ወራት በፊት ከአርባምንጭ ተይዘው ወደማዕከላዊ የመጡት በአርባምንጭ የሰማያዊ ፓርቲ አባላት እነ ሉሉ መሰለ ዛሬ ፍርድ ቤት ቀርበው 28 ቀናት ጊዜ ቀጠሮ ተሰጥቶባቸዋል፡፡

Prominent Ethiopian Journalist Arrested

A prominent Ethiopian journalist has been arrested by federal police.


The Federal Police arrested Getachew Shiferaw, the Editor in Chief of Negere Ethiopia Newspaper, today in the morning while he was walking to his office.  Some hours later, the journalist was reportedly taken to Meakelaw, the notorious prison in Addis Ababa.

According to a co-worker and close friend, Getachew’s house was searched by security officials right after his arrest.

Getachew Shiferaw is one of few outspoken journalists left in the country. He is known for his critics of Hailemariam desalegn‘s government.

The arrest of Getachew is part of a large-scale government campaign against journalists and bloggers. Few days ago another journalist was reportdly arrested in Addis Ababa.

According to human right groups, Ethiopia is the leading jailer of journalists and bloggers in Africa next to Eritrea.

EU calls for peaceful dialogue to end killings in Ethiopia

The European Union (EU) calls on Ethiopian government and opposition to end peacefully through dialogue the ongoing conflicts in Oromia and Amhara regions of the country, which has caused the death of dozens of citizens, among others.

“The recent unrest in the Oromia and Amhara regions of Ethiopia has caused a considerable number of casualties and only a constructive dialogue among all affected parties can lead to a peaceful and sustainable resolution of such disputes. Working within the framework of Ethiopia’s Constitution, all stakeholders need to continue such a dialogue and refrain from recourse to violence and inflammatory statements,” EU said in its press statement yesterday.

“The EU extends its condolences to the families and friends of the deceased. The reassurance of the consultation with the concerned communities is encouraging,”it said.

Media reports show that over 80 people have so far died in a month long Oromia students protest against the Addis Ababa city master-plan, which the students considered as land grab from the poor Oromo farmers.

While on the North part of the country in Gondar area of Amhara Region,clashes have been reported between the Amhara and Kimant ethnic groups resulting in death of dozens of people.

Ethiopia: Prosecutors Appeal Court Acquittal of Zone 9 Bloggers


(Freedom House) — In response to Ethiopian prosecutors appealing the dismissal of terrorism charges against five members of the Zone 9 bloggers and authorities issuing them a court summons, Freedom House issued the following statement:

“The Federal Supreme Court should reject the prosecution’s appeal and reaffirm the bloggers’ innocence as the High Court did in October,” said Vukasin Petrovic, director of Africa programs. “The terrorism charges against the bloggers were unfounded from the beginning and are part of the government’s relentless onslaught against freedom of expression.”

Background

In October, the Federal High Court acquitted four members of the Zone 9 bloggers: Abel Wabella, Natnael Feleke, Atnaf Berhane, Soleyana Shimeles (in absentia) of terrorism charges and lowered charges against Befekadu Hailu to “incitement of violence through writing.” Two other members of the blogging collective and three journalists arrested in April 2014 and charged in the same file with the five bloggers had their charges dropped and released days before US president Barrack Obama’s trip to Ethiopia in July. The appeal hearing date for the five has been set for December 30.

Dear Mr. Secretary,

We, members of the Oromo Democratic Front, are writing to you to bring to your attention the violent suppression of the Oromo people’s ongoing peaceful protests by the ruling Ethiopian People’s Revolutionary Democratic Front (EPRDF) regime in Ethiopia. We are concerned that the regime’s act of violently suppressing the peaceful expression of grievances by the Oromos could have far-reaching implications for the stability of Ethiopia and the beleaguered Horn of Africa region at large.

The Oromos are Ethiopia’s single largest national community inhabiting large swathe of Ethiopia bordering the settlements of the majority of the country’s nationalities. The Oromo Democratic Front (ODF) was established abroad in late March 2013 with the intention of returning home to peacefully and legally contribute its share in refining the current federal system in Ethiopia.

Unfortunately, the ODF’S intention of returning home, despite several communications and contacts with the leaders of the regime, has not been realized due to the other party’s lack of political will to facilitate our peaceful participation in the country’s affairs. Literally, we are not allowed to return to our home country.

Mr. Secretary,

For the second time in as many years, peaceful protests by the Oromo people are sweeping the Oromia Regional State – the Oromo settled Region of the Ethiopian Federation – as we write. Protesters are, once again, peacefully demanding that the ruling party uphold and implement articles of the Federal Constitution concerning relations between Addis Ababa, the dual seat of the Oromia state and the Federal government, and the adjacent districts and towns located in the Oromia Regional State. Instead of passing the law stipulated in the Constitution with this respect, the regime announced policies inferring the subordination of the administration of these towns and districts to that of Addis Ababa.

The policy announcement was made without any consultation with the concerned Oromo public thereby fuelling especially peasants’ fear of eviction from their ancestral farmland without sufficient compensation or alternative means of livelihood. This fear of eviction stems from past and ongoing practices of expanding urban areas without any regard to the interests and survival of the affected subsistence farmers.

The ongoing Oromo protests are highly ironic for at least three reasons. First, the ruling EPRDF won every seat both at the Regional State and Federal levels in the general election held barely a half year ago. Hence, the protests cast a shadow over the ruling party’s popularity supposedly reflected by its sweeping electoral victory.

Second, protesters are simply demanding the implementation of the relevant articles of the Constitution – a constitution strictly tailored to reflect the interests and dominance of the EPRDF. Nothing more evidences the ruling party’s unwillingness to uphold the rule of law than its refusal to respect even a constitution framed and ratified in order to reflect and legalize its particular interests and views.

Third, the ruling EPRDF takes great pride in being the sole party in Ethiopia championing the cause of the poor, particularly the rural poor peasantry. And it has won international acclaim for its efforts to alleviate poverty by prioritizing economic development over issues of democracy and human rights. However, the supposed beneficiaries of this claim and acclaim, the rural peasantry, are at the forefront of the ongoing protests in Oromia thereby belying the official rhetoric.

Mr. Secretary,

Mass peaceful protests in urban and rural parts of the Oromia Regional State have being going on for the last four continuous weeks, an unprecedented occurrence in the history of contemporary Ethiopia. The ruling EPRDF has responded not by heeding the grievances of protestors but by unleashing its security forces that have killed dozens and rounded up hundreds who are once again destined to end up in its notorious gulags.

We are aware that the US Government and its international allies consider the Ethiopian regime as the anchor of regional stability in the Horn of Africa. Sadly, this focus on the role of Ethiopia as the pillar of regional stability has evidently diverted the need to evaluate the basis of stability in Ethiopia itself. That this stability rests on naked coercion instead of democratic legitimacy is clearly evident from the ongoing mass uprising in Oromia and the government’s crackdown.

Consequently, the mass protests in Oromia should be seen as the writing on the wall demanding attention and action with immediacy. Although grievances have erupted into open protests to date in Oromia alone, discontent with maladministration is gathering steam in all other Regional States. And all of this is sadly unfolding at a time when over 15 million Ethiopians are facing the threat of famine requiring prioritizing saving lives instead of squandering energy and resources on violently suppressing peaceful demands that the Constitution be upheld and implemented.

Mr. Secretary, the time to act to save Ethiopia from the fate of Somalia and Syria is now. Accordingly, we humbly ask you to publicly advise the Ethiopian regime to immediately take the following actions:

1. Cease and desist from continuing to murder, maim and imprison peaceful Oromo protesters and to implement the constitutional provisions being demanded by the protesters;

2. Release all those detained during this and previous protests in Oromia as well as all other political prisoners and prisoners of conscience;

3. Revoke all laws passed during the last decade contrary to the spirit and letter of the Constitution;

4. Join us in forming an inclusive mechanism for hammering out a country-wide common understanding on peaceful coexistence by all cultural and religious communities;

5. Allow all those who want to operate peacefully and legally to return to the country in order to partake in these deliberations.

በኖርዌይ ኦስሎ ከተማ ታላቅ የሰላማዊ ሰልፍ ተደረገ

በዲሞክራሲያዊ ለውጥ በኢትዮጵያ ድጋፍ ድርጅት ኖርዌይ አዘጋጅነት በዛሬው እለት በኖርዌይ ኦስሎ 18, December, 2015 (ታህሳስ 8, 2008 ዓ.ም ) በአዲስ አበባ ማስተር ፕላን የወያኔ መንግስት በኦሮሞ ተማሪዎች ላይ ያደረሰውን ግድያ እና በምዕራብ ኢትዮጵይ በጎንደር ክልል ለሱዳን ተላልፎ የሚሠጠውን መሬት ምክንያት በመቃወም በኖርዌይ ኦስሎ ከተማ በኖርዌይ፣ ኦስሎ ተደረገ ።

በሰላማዊ ሰልፉ ላይ በመቶዎቹ የሚቆጠሩ በኦስሎና በተለያዩ ከተሞች የሚኖሩ ኢትዮጵያኖች የድጋፍ ድርጅቱ ባደረገላቸው ጥሪ መሰረት ሰልፉ በተጀመረበት ቦታ በመገኛት በግፍ ለሞቱት የኦሮሞ ተማሪዎች ዘረኛውና አንባገነኑ የወያኔ መንግስት በመቃወም ድምጻቸውን አሰምታዋል ::

ሰላማዊ ሰልፉ በኖርዌይ የሰአት አቆጣጠር ከቀኑ 14:00 ጀምሮ እስከ 15:30 የተደረገ ሲሆን በሰላማዊ ሰልፉ ላይ የተገኙ ኢትዮጵያኖች በሰላማዊ መንገድ ጥያቄያቸውን ሲጠይቁ በነበሩ የኦሮሞ ተማሪዎች ላይ ጥይትን በማዝነብ ኢሰብሃዊ ድርጊት የፈጸመውን ግድያ እንዲሁም ለሱዳን ያለ አግባብ በሚስጥር ተላልፎ ሊሠጥ ስለታሰበው መሬት የተነሳ በጎንደር ሕዝብ ላይ እየተደረገ ያለውን የዘር ማጥፋት ወንጀል እና በጎንደር እስር ቤት ውስጥ ለተገደሉ ወገኖቻችን በመቃወም ቡዙዎችን የገደለውን የወያኔን መንግስት የሚያወግዙ የተለያዩ መፈክሮችን በማያዝ እና በማሰማት ተቃውሞቸውን በሀይል ገልጸዋል::

በሰልፉ ላይ ሰልፈኞቹ ያሰሟቸው ከነበሩት መፈክሮች መካከል የወያኔ መንግስት ገዳይ መንግስት ነው፣ የኦሮሞ ተማሪዎችን በጅምላ መግደል ይቁም፣የኦሮሞ ወንድሞቻችን ደም የእኛም ደም ነው፣ በኢትዮጵያ በጅምላ ስለተገደሉት የኦሮሞ ተማሪዎች አዝነናል፣የታሰሩ የፖለቲካ እስረኞች ይፈቱ፣ መንግስት በሚስጥር የሚሰጠው የመሬት ውል ተቀባይነት የለውም የሚሉ ይገኙበታል:: ሰልፈኞቹ በቀጥታ ወደ ኖርዌይጃውያን ፓርላማ ጽህፈት ቤት በመሄድ ለኖርዌይ መንግስት ጉዳዩን በግልጽ ያሳወቁ ሲሆን ኖርዌይ ከወያኔ መንግስት ጋር ያላትን ግንኙነት እንድትመረም ጠይቀዋል::


በሰላማዊ ሰልፉ ላይ ከዲሞክራሲያዊ ለውጥ በኢትዮጵያ ድጋፍ ድርጅት በኖርዌይ አመራር አቶ ዳንኤል አበበ፣ የአርበኞች ግንቦት7 ለአንድነትና ዴሞክራሲ ንቅናቄ ዶ/ር ሙላለም አዳም፣ ከኖርዌይ ሸንጎ አቶ ግደይ ዘራፅዬን፣የኢትዮጵያውያን ማህበር በኖርዌይ አመራር ወ/ሮ ዙፋን አማረ የተገኙ መሪዎችና ተወካዪች የወያኔን ግፍ በመቃወም ንግግር አድርገዋል::በመጨረሻም የዲሞክራሲያዊ ለውጥ በኢትዮጵያ ድጋፍ ድርጅት በኖርዌይ ሊቀመንበር አቶ አቶ ዳንኤል አበበ ወያኔ በዘር ከፋፍለህ ግዛ ስርአት ከታሪካዊ ጠላታችንን ከወያኔ ለመጋላገል የኦሮሞ ወንድሞቻችን የጀመሩትን ህዝባዊ እምቢተኝነት አሁኑኑ በመቀላቀል የምናደርገውን ወገናዊ ግዴታችን ብቻ ሳይሆን ለራሳችንና ለኢትዮጵያ ህልውናም ጭምር የምናደርገው ታሪካዊ የትውልድ ጥሪ ነው በማለት አስተላልፈዋል።


በዚህም ድርጅታቸው በድርጊቱ በጣም እንዳዘኑና በጥቃቱ ሰለባ ለሆኑና ለሞቱ ዜጎች ለቤተሰቦቻቸው መጽናናትን በመመኘት የታሰሩ ወጣት የኦሮሞ ተማሪዎች በአስቸኮይ እንዲፈቱ፣ የዚህም ድርጊት ፈጻሚ አንባገነኖች በአስቸኮይ ለፍርድ እንዲቀርቡ በመጠየቅ የድርጅቱን የአቋም መልክት ለኖርዌይጃውያን ምክር ቤት ተወካይ ያስረከቡ ሲሆን የምክር ቤቱም ተወካይ ንግግር አድርገው ሰላማዊ ሰልፉ በተያዘለት ሰአት ተጠናቋል::

Afar Human Rights Organization stands for freedom and justice of the oppressed and marginalized people of Ethiopia. The protests across Oromia region by peaceful students and public at large against land grab and eviction of Oromo farmers is being met by brutal crackdown of the EPRDF regime. The current killings are arrogant repetition of the brutal massacre of peaceful protestors in the region throughout May 2014 by the regime.

The people across Oromia have spoken clearly and said NO! No eviction of Oromo farmers. The people of Afar said No! No to the involuntary eviction from the banks of river awash-its life line. The people across Ethiopia are saying NO to repression. Tantalizing actions of EPRDF are being repealed and peacefully resisted by the people across the nation using principled and undeterred peaceful protests.

Afar Human Rights organization express its solidarity with our brothers and sisters of Oromo protestors in their struggle for protection of basic human rights. The quests of the protestors are within international laws and norms to demand basic human rights. AHRO demand an immediate end to the killing of peaceful Oromo protestors. AHRO urge the EPRDF regime to stop killing and massacring peaceful protestors and express our deepest condolences for victim families who are enduring persistent pain and sufferings for the lives lost by the barbaric actions of EPRDF.

In this defining time, AHRO call up on all Ethiopian people to stand in solidarity and join the struggle for democracy in Ethiopia in union with our Oromo brothers and Sisters. The struggle of Oromo is part of the struggle of Ethiopian people for genuine democracy and protection of Human Rights. Killing and torturing Oromo students and farmers will stop the desire for basic human and democratic rights rather will unite the people against our common oppressor.

AHRO call upon all political parties and civic organizations in Ethiopia to come together and reach an agreement where the future of our nation and the people envisions prevalence of democracy, protection of human rights, freedom and unity.

The Oromo Liberation front strongly condemns the mass killing of Oromo Students and farmers across Oromia for the last three weeks by the TPLF minority regime. We also condemn the massacre the TPLF regime has committed against people in Gondar.

For the last 24 years, the TPLF Regime has been committing numerous heinous crimes against all people of Ethiopia. The TPLF regime killed thousands, arrested thousands, and expelled thousands from their lands and birthplaces. They disposed and displaced thousands from their ancestral lands, and used for their benefits. These actions show how cruel and fascist the TPLF/ EPRDF/ Minority government has been in Ethiopia.

The TPLF regime which has no mandate from Ethiopia people though has been known for its pedagogical lies, corruption and crimes against all people of Ethiopia; specifically it has targeted the Oromo people to control their fertile resources. Thousands of Oromo farmers are losing their lands under the pretext of Integrated Master Plan of Addis Ababa (Finfinnee). The deliberate killing of innocent people who peacefully protested against land grab from Oromo farmers by TPLF army which is armed to its teeth, foreshadow a looming genocide against Oromo people.

This cruel regime is able to commit all these crimes by dividing the people of Ethiopia. Now, time is an essence for all peoples in Ethiopia to stand firm with Oromo people who have been fighting the TPLF regime for freedom, democracy, justice and human rights. The Oromo struggle is a struggle for freedom, justice, equality and human rights. When Oromo people are free from TPLF regime, all people in Ethiopia will be free. We are also encouraged by the support and solidarity of different Ethiopian political & Civil Organizations against the massacre of Oromo students and farmers by the TPLF regime. Now!

The OLF calls upon all Ethiopian to join the Oromo people struggle for freedom, democracy, justice & human rights, and once for all to dismantle the genocidal regime of TPLF. To that effect , the OLF calls for all inclusive struggle that include all political parties and civil organizations that will enable the Peoples in Ethiopia to decide their destiny by establishing government of people , for people and by people in Ethiopia.

We also warn everybody to be vigilant against possible evil actions of the TPLF to instigate animosity in the country by destroying property and killing none Oromo’s and blaming on Oromo’s. The TPLF will do this to disrupt this genuine movement towards freedom, democracy, human rights and justice. The Ethiopian people should be aware of the motives of the TPLF as it has been doing for the last 24 years since it seized political power in Ethiopia. It is widely known that the Oromo people have no problem with other people of Ethiopian, except with the TPLF and the systems that have been killing them, disposing them from their lands, arresting them & torturing them.
Finally, we call upon the International Community to stand with Oromo people, not with the minority TPLF Regime in Ethiopia.

Let’s stand together against the TPLF minority genocidal Regime.

መድረክ ባለ 6 ነጥብ መግለጫ አወጣ | “ሕዝቡ በጉልበትና በማጭበርበር የተቀማውን መብት ለማስመለስ በሰላማዊ መንገድ ይታገል”

የሕዝቦችን ሕገመንግሥታዊ መብቶች በመጣስ የሚከናወኑ የኢህአዴግ ሕገወጥ እርምጃዎች ሕዝባችንን ለከፍተኛ ችግር፣ ሀገራችንንም ለአሳሳቢ ሁኔታ እየዳረጉ ስለሆነ በአስቸኳይ ሊቆሙ ይገባል!!

የኢህአዴግ አገዛዝ ሥልጣን ከያዘበት ጊዜ ጀምሮ በተግባር ሊያውላቸው ያልተዘጋጀባቸውን ድንጋጌዎች ከሀገሪቱ ሕገመንግሥት ጀምሮ ሲያውጅ ቆይቷል፡፡ ይሁን እንጂ እነዚህን ለፕሮፓጋንዳ ፍጆታ ያወጃቸውን ድንጋጌዎች በማፍረስና በተግባር እንዳይውሉ በማድረግ የዜጎችንና የሕዝቡን መብቶች የሚጥሱ ተግባራትን እየፈጸመ ይገኛል፡፡ ይህ ሁኔታ ከአንድ የሕዝብን የሥልጣን ባለቤትነት በጉልበትና በማጭበርበር ቀምቶ መንግሥት ነኝ ከሚል አምባገነን ቡድን የሚጠበቅ ቢሆንም፣ መዘዙ የሀገራችንን ደህንነትና የሕዝቦቻችንን እኩልነትና አንድነት ለማይሹ ኃይሎች አፍራሽ እንቅስቃሴ ቀዳዳ እየሰጣቸው መሆኑ መድረክን በእጅጉ ያሳስበዋል፡፡

ከእነዚህ ሕገመንገሥታዊ ድንጋጌዎች ጥሰት መነሻነት ከተፈጠሩት ውስብስብ ችግሮች ውስጥ አንዱ የአዲስ አበባ ከተማንና የኦሮሚያን ክልላዊ መንግሥት ግንኙነት በሚመለከት፣ በሕገመንግሥቱ አንቀጽ 49 ንዑስ አንቀጽ 5 “የኦሮሚያ ክልል የአገልግሎት አቅርቦት ወይም የተፈጥሮ ሀብት አጠቃቀምንና የመሳሰሉትን ጉዳዮች በተመለከተ እንዲሁም አዲስ አበባ በኦሮሚያ ክልል መሐል የሚገኝ በመሆኑ የሚነሱ ሁለቱን የሚያስተሳስሩ አስተዳደራዊ ጉዳዮችን በተመለከተ ያለው ልዩ ጥቅም ይጠበቅለታል” የሚለውን በማንአለብኝነት ከመጣስ የመነጨ ችግር ነው፡፡ በዚህ ረገድ የኢህአዴግ ሥርዓተ-አልበኝነት መገለጫ ሆኖ የቆየው በሕገመንግሥቱ የሰፈረው ዝርዝር የአፈጻጸም ሕግ ሳይወጣ ከ21 ዓመታት በላይ መቆየቱ ተጠቃሽ ነው፡፡ እንዲሁም በአዲስ አበባ አከበቢ የሚሠሩ የልማት ሥራዎችንም በሚመለከት ሕዝቡን በአግባቡ ሳያወያዩ ጥቂት እበላ ባይ ካድሬዎችን በአስፈጻሚነት በማሰማራት የእርሻ መሬታቸውን እየነጠቁ ወደ አዲስ አበባ ከተማ የማካለል እንቅስቃሴ ላይ መሠማራቱ በተከታታይ የተቃውሞ እንቅስቃሴዎችንና ውዝግቦችን ከማስነሳቱም በላይ ለብዙ ዜጎች ሕይወት በኢህአዴግ መንግሥት አርመኔአዊ እርምጃ መቀጠፍ ምክንያት ሆኖአል፡፡

ባለፉት ሁለት ሳምንታት የአዲስ አበባ ከተማን ከሕግ አግባብ ውጪ ማማስፋት ጋር በተያያዘ በሕዝቡ ዘንድ ካደረው ስጋት በመነሳት የተቀሰቀሰውን ሰላማዊ ሕዝባዊ ተቃውሞን በኃይል ለማስቆም የኢህአዴግ መንግሥት በወሰደው እርምጃም በርካታ ተማሪዎችና ሌሎች ዜጎች መገደላቸውን መድረክ በእጀጉ ይኮንነዋል፡፡

የተገደሉት ዜጎችም
1ኛ፡- ተማሪ ካረሳ ጫላ ምዕራብ ወለጋ ጉልሶ ወረዳ፣
2ኛ፡- ተማሪ ጉቱ አበራ ምዕራብ ወለጋ ጉልሶ ወረዳ፣
3ኛ፡- ተማሪ ሚፍታህ ጁንዲ በምዕራብ ሐረርጌ በደኖ ወረዳ፣
4ኛ፡- ተማሪ ገዘሃኝ ኦልሂቃ የሀራማያ ዩንቨርሲቲ ተማሪ፣
5ኛ፡- ተማሪ ደጀኔ ሰርቤሳ በደቡብ ምዕራብ ሸዋ ቶሌ ወረዳ፣
6ኛ፡- ተማሪ በቀለ ሰቦቃ አዳበርጋ ወረዳ ሙገር፣
7ኛ፡- ተማሪ በቀለ ሰይፉ አዳበርጋ ወረዳ ሙገር፣
8ኛ፡- ተማሪ ሙራዲ አብዱ የሀራማያ 2ኛ ደረጃ ተማሪ፣
9ኛ፡- አቶ ጫላ ተሾሜ ምዕራብ ሸዋ ጨለያ ወረዳ ባቢቻ ከተማ፣
10ኛ፡- ተማሪ አብደታ ባይሳ ምዕራብ ሸዋ ጫለያ ወረዳ ባብቻ ከተማ፣
11ኛ፡- ተማሪ ዱሌ ምዕራብ ሸዋ ጨለያ ወረዳ ጌዶ ከተማ፣
12ኛ፡- አቶ ታመነ ጸጋዬ ምዕራብ ሸዋ ጨለያ ወረዳ ጌዶ ከተማ፣
13ኛ፡-ተማሪ ደረጀ ጋዲሰ ምዕራብ ሸዋ ጨለያ ወረዳ ጌዶ ከተማ፣
14ኛ፡- ተማሪ ፈቃዱ ግርማ ምዕራብ ሸዋ ጨለያ ወረዳ ጌዶ ከተማ፣
15ኛ፡-ተማሪ ሉጫ ገማቹ ምዕራብ ወለጋ ኢናንጎ ወረዳ፣
16ኛ ተማሪ አያና ባንቲ ምዕራብ ወለጋ ኢናንጎ ወረዳ፣
17ኛ፡- ተማሪ አላዛር ምዕራብ ወለጋ ኢናንጎ ወረዳ ነዋሪ

25ኛ፡- አቶ ታዴ አንዲሳ ወንጪ ከተማ፣
26ኛ፡- አቶ እናውጋው ኃይሉ ግንደበረት ወረዳ፣
27ኛ፡- ተማሪ አብደታ ለታ ግንደበረት ወረዳ
28ኛ፡-አቶ ባይኢሳ ገደፋ አቡና ግንደበረት ወረዳ
29ኛ፡- ተማሪ አስቻለው ወርቁ ግንጪ ወረዳ፣
30ኛ፡- ተማሪ ሰይፉ ቱራ ግንጪ ወረዳ፣
31ኛ፡- ተማሪ አሸናፊ ግንጪ ወረዳ፣
32ኛ፡- አቶ ገላና ባቃና ጪቱ ከተማ ነዋሪ የነበሩ ስለመሆናቸው የደረሱን መረጃዎች ያሳያሉ፡፡

ከዚህም ሌላ ከመቶ ባለይ ዜጎች ቆስለዋል፣ በብዙ መቶዎች የሚቆጠሩት ደግሞ ለእስራት ተዳርገዋል፡፡ ሰላማዊና ሕጋዊ ተቃውሞን ለማፈን በመንግሥት እየተወሰደ ያለው የኃይል እርምጃ እስከ አሁንም እንደቀጠለ በመሆኑ፣ በዜጎቻችን ላይ እየደረሰ ያለው ጉዳት መድረክን በእጅጉ እያሳሰበው ይገኛል፡፡ እንደዚሁም በቅርቡ በጎንደር ከተማ በሚገኘው ወሕኒ ቤት በእስረኞች ላይ የተፈጸመው ግዲያ መድረክን አሳስቦታል፡፡

ከዚህም ሌላ በሕገመንግሥቱ አንቀጽ 40 ንዑስ አንቀጽ 4 ላይ “የኢትዮጵያ አርሶ አደሮች መሬት በነፃ የማግኘትና ከመሬታቸው ያለመነቀል መብታቸው የተከበረ ነው” የሚለውንና በዚሁ አንቀጽ ንዑስ አንቀጽ 5 የኢትዮጵያ አርብቶ አደሮች ለግጦሽም ሆነ ለእርሻ የሚጠቀሙበት መሬት በነፃ የማግኘት፣ የመጠቀምና ከመሬታቸው ያለመፈናቀል መብት አላቸው” ተብሎ የተደነገገውን በመተላለፍ፣ በከተሞችና በእንቨስትመንት ማስፋፋት ስም የአርሶ አደሮችንና አርብቶ አደሮችን መሬት እየቀሙ በማፈናቀል ለከፍተኛ የኑሮ ችግሮች እየዳረጉዋቸው ይገኛሉ፡፡ መድረክ ይህንን የኢህአዴግ መንግሥት የመሬት ቅሚያ እርምጃ ደጋግሞ ሲያጋልጥ የቆየ ሲሆን በእርምጃው ምክንያት በሕዝቡ ላይ እያደረሰ ያለው የጉዳት መጠን ከጊዜ ወደጊዜ በአሁኑ ወቅት እየሰፋ ስለመገኘቱ መረጃዎች ያሳያሉ፡፤

በተለይም ከቅርብ ጊዜ ወዲህ አገዛዙ በርካታ የሀገሪቱን ከተሞች ለማስፋፋትና መሬቱንም በፌዴራል መንግሥት ቁጥጥር ሥር በመሬት አስተዳደር ኮርፖሬሽን ለማስተዳደር፣ የማስተር ፕላንና የሪፎርም ከተሞች ብሎ በመሰየም፣ በየከተሞቹ አከባቢዎች የሚኖሩ አርሶ አደሮች ይዞታዎች አርሶ አደሩን ሳያማክሩና ተገቢውን ካሳ ሳይከፍሉ ወደ ከተማ ለማካለል እየተደረገ ያለው እንቅስቃሴ ነዋሪውን ሕዝብ ለከፍተኛ ስጋትና ጭንቀት እየዳረጋቸው ይገኛል፡፡ ስለሆነም የኢህአዴግ አገዛዝ ሥልጣን ከያዘበት ጊዜ አንስቶ በማንአለብኝነት አምባገነናዊ ስሜት እየተመራ ፌዴራላዊ ሥርዓቱንና የዜጎችን ሕገመንግሥታዊ መብቶች በመጣስ እየፈጸመ ከሚገኘው ሕገወጥ ተግባር እንዲቆጠብ እንጠይቃለን፡፡ በተለይም፡-

1ኛ፡- ከአዲስ አበባ ከተማና ከኦሮሚያ ክልል ግንኙነት ጋር በተያያዘ እየተከሰቱ ያሉ ችግሮች ሕገመንግሥቱን ተግባራዊ ባለማድረግ ምክንያት እየተከሰቱ ስለሆኑ የሕገመንግሥቱን አንቀጽ 49 ንዑስ አንቀጽ 5 ተግባራዊ የሚያድርግ ሕግ በአስቸኳይ ወጥቶ ተግባራዊ እንዲደረግና ለችግሩ ዘላቂ እልባት እንዲሰጥ፣ ለከተማዋ ልማት የሚወጡ እቅዶችም የሕገመንገሥቱን ድንጋጌ የሚያከብሩ ሆነው የአከባቢውን አርሶ አደሮች መብትና ጥቅም በሚገባ የሚያስጠብቅ እንዲሆኑ፣

2ኛ፡- በቅርቡም መንግሥት ሕገወጥ እርምጃ ለመውሰድ በተንቀሳቀሰበት ምክንያት በኦሮሚያ ክልል ሰላማዊ የተቃውሞ ሰልፎችን ባደረጉና በሌሎችም ሰላማዊ ዜጎች ላይ እየተፈጸመ ያለው የኃይል እርምጃ በአስቸኳይ እንዲቆም፣

3ኛ፡- እስከአሁን የዜጎችን ሕይወት በሕገወጥነት ያጠፉና ሌሎች ጉዳቶችን ያደረሱ የመንግሥት አካላትም ለሕግ እንዲቀርቡና ለሟቾቹ ቤተሰቦችም ተገቢው ካሳ እነዲከፈላቸው እንዲደረግ፣

4ኛ፡- በመላ ሀገሪቱ ውስጥ የሚገኙ አርሶ አደሮችና አርብቶ አደሮች ሕገመንግሥቱ ያረጋገጠላቸው ከመሬታቸው የያለመፈናቀል መብታቸው ተከብሮ፣ በየአከባቢያቸው በልማት ሥራዎች ሰበብ ኑሮአቸው እየተናጋ ለችግር የሚዳረጉበት ሁኔታ በአስቸኳይ ተወግዶ፣ የሚከናወኑት የልማት ሥራዎችም ቢሆኑ የአከባቢውን ሕዝብ ይሁንታ ያገኘና መብታቸውን የጠበቀ እንዲሆን እንዲደረግ፤
5ኛ፡- በተለይም በአሁኑ ወቅት ከተሞችን በማስፋፋት ስም የአርሶ አደሩን መሬቶች ወደ ከተማ ለማካለልና በከፍተኛ ዋጋ በሊዝ ለመሸጥ የሚደረገው እንቅስቃሴ፣ አርሶ አደሩን በስጋት ውስጥ እየከተተው ስለሚገኝ፣ ኑሮአቸውን ለማሻሻል የሚበቃ በቂ ካሳ ሳይከፈል ይዞታቸውን ለመንጠቅ የሚደረገው እንቅስቃሴ እንዲቆም እንዲደረግ፣

6ኛ፡- በቅርቡ በጎንደር ከተማ በሚገኘው ወሕኒ ቤት የተገደሉ በርካታ ዜጎች ጉዳይ በአስቸኳይ ተጣርቶ የሰላማዊ ዜጎችን ሕይወት ያጠፉና ጉዳት ያደረሱ አካላት ለፍርድ እንዲቀርቡና ለሟቾቹ ቤተሰቦችም ተገቢው ካሳ እንዲከፈላቸው እንዲደረግ አጥብቀን እንጠይቃለን፡፡

በመጨረሻም መድረክ በንጽሐን ዜጎቻችን ላይ በኢህአዴግ መንግሥት የተወሰደውንና እየተወሰደ ያለውን ኢሰብአዊ ግዲያ በጥበቅ እያወገዘ ለሟቾቹ ቤተሰቦች መጽናናትን ይመኛል፡፡ መላው ሕዝባችንም በኢህአዴግ በጉልበትና በማጭበርበር በተካሄዱት ምርጫዎች የተቀማውን ሕገመንግሥታዊ መብቶቹን ለማስከበር ሰላማዊ ትግሉን እንዲያጠናክር የኢትዮጵያ ፌዴራላዊ ዴሞክራሲያዊ አንድነት መድረክ ጥሪ ያቀርባል፡፡

ሰማያዊ ፓርቲና የኦሮሞ ፌደራሊስት ኮንግረንስ (ኦፌኮ) በጋራ ለመስራት መስማማታቸውን የሰማያዊ ፓርቲ ምክትል ሊቀመንበር አቶ ነገሰ ተፋረደኝ ለነገረ ኢትዮጵያ ገልፀዋል፡፡ ሁለቱ ፓርቲዎች ዛሬ ታህሳስ 5/2008 ዓ.ም ባደረጉት ስብሰባ በወቅታዊ ጉዳዮች ላይ የጋራ መግለጫ በመስጠት፣ መንግስት የሚፈፅመውን የሰብአዊ መብት ጥሰት በመከታተል ለማጋለጥ እንዲሁም ሰላማዊ ሰልፍና ስብሰባዎችን በጋራ ለማካሄድ እንደተስማሙ ምክትል ሊቀመንበሩ ለነገረ ኢትዮጵያ ገልፀዋል፡፡

በተለያዩ ጊዜያት ሰለ ሰብአዊ መብት መከበር ፣ሰለ ፍትህ ፣እኩልነት እና ሃሳብን በነጻነት ስለመግለጽ ሲጽፉ እና ሲሰብኩ የአወዛጋቢው የጸረ ሸብር ህግ ሽፋን ለከባድ ቅጣት እና እሰራት የተዳረጉት የኢትዮጵያ ነጻ ፕሬስ አባላት የሆኑት እነ ጋዜጠኛ እስክንድር ነጋ፣ ተመሰገ ደሳለኝ፣ ውብሸት ታዮ፣ሰለሞን ከበደ፣የሱፍ ጌታቸው ፣ሳሌህ አድሪስ ተስፋ ልደት ኬዳኔ አና የመሰሳሰሉት ጋዜጠኞች ለአፍታ እንኳን ሊዘነጉ አይገባም ሲል አለም አቀፉ የሰብአዊ መብት ተሟጋቹ ድርጅት አሚኒስቲ ኢንተርናሽናል (Amensty International) የተማጸኖ ጥሪውን አቅርቧል።

የመብት ተሟጋቹ ድርጅት በተላንትናው እለት የተከበረው አለማቀፍ የሰብ አዊ መብት ቀንን በማሰመልከት ባወጣው መግለጫው ከላይ የተጠቀሱት ሃሳብን በነጻነት የመግለጽ መብት አርበኞቹ እነ አሰክንደር ነጋ እና ሰማቸው ያለተጠቀሱት ነገር ግን በተለያዩ የአገዛዙ ማጎሪያ ቤቶች ውስጥ ተወርውረው እየማቀቁ የሚገኙትን ወገኖች ሰለ ተጋድሏቸው እና ሰለ ከፈሉት መሰዋትነት ልንዘነጋቸው አይገባም ብሏል።ጋዜጠኛ እስክንድር ነጋ በአረቡ አለም ተቀሰቅሶ የነበረው የለውጥ ማእበልን በተመለከተ እና ከኢትዮጵያ ነባራዊ ሁኔታ ጋር ሰለሚኖረው ተዛማጅነት ሰፊ ትንታኔ ማቅረቡን ተከተሎ በአገዛዙ የጸረሽብር ህግ ክስ ቀርቦበት የ18 አመታት እስራት የተዳረገ ሲሆን ጋዜጠኛ ውብሸት እንዲሁ የኢሃአዲግ የሁለት አሰርት አመታት ጉዞን በመንቀፉ ለ14 አመታታ በዘዋይ ማረሚያ ቤት ተወርውሯል።በአሁኑ ወቅት ከእስራቱ ባሻገር በጤና መታወክ ምክንያት በእስር ቤት አየማቀቀ የሚገኘው ጋዜጠኛ ተመስገንም የተለያዩ ክሶች ቀርበውበት ለእስራት ተዳርጓል። በቅርቡ የአሜሪካው ፕ/ት ባራክ ኦባማ የአ/አ ጉብኝታቸውን ምክንያት በማድረግ የ ዞን 9 ማህበራዊ ድህረ ገጽ ጦማሪያኖች እና ጻፊት ሪዮት አለሙ ከእስራት መለቀቃቸውን ያወሳው ዘገባው ኢትዮጵያ ባለፈው የፈረንጆቹ 2014 አመት ከ17 በላይ ጋዜጠኞችን በማሰር እና ብዛት ያላቸውን ደግሞ አገራቸውን ፣ ቤተሰባቸውን እና ሙያቸውን ጥለው እንዲሰደዱ በማድረግ በአለም በ4ኛ ደረጃ ትገኛለች ሲል ያወሳል።

በጎረቤት ግብጽ በቅርቡ የተደረገውን ህዝባዊ ቁጣን እና የመንግስት ለውጥን ለአልጀዚራ ቲሊቭዥን ሲዘግቡ በካይሮ ባለሰልጣንት ለተወሰኑ ወራቶች ለእስራት ተደርገው የነበሩት ፒተር ግረስቲ ፣መሃመድ ፋሂም እና ባሂር ሞሃመድ በመላው አለም ማህበረሰብ ዘንድ እለታዊ የመወያያ ርእሶች ሲሆኑ ከ10 አመታት በላይ በእስር ቤት አንዲማቀቁ የተበየነባቸው እነ እስክንድር ነጋ የከፈሉት መሰዋትነት እና የአለማቀፉ ማህበረሰብ ለችግራቸው ትኩርት ሰጪነት እና በአገዛዙ ላይ ጫና የመስፈጠር ሚዛኑ የተዛባ (አናሳ )ነው ተብሏል። ጋዜጠኛ አሰክንደር እና የተወሰስኑት በእስር ላይ የሚገኙት የሙያ አጋሮቹ ለፈጸሙት ሙያዊ ኣና ሰነምግባራዊ ተጋድሎ የተለያዩ አለማቀፋዊ ሽልማቶችን እና አክብሮት ማግኘታቸው አይዘነጋም።


በዚህ አጋጣሚ ኢትዮጵያዊያን በተለይ ደግሞ በነጻው እና በሰለጠነው አለም የሚኖረው የኢትዮጵያ ማሕበረሰብ በአገር ቤት ውስጥ ሰላም ፣ ዲሞክራሲ እና የሃሳብ ነጻነት እንዲከበር ከፍተኛ መሰዋትነት በመክፈላቸው እራሳቸውን እና ቤተሰቦቻቸውን ለ ከፍተኛ አደጋ ያጋለጡት እነ እስክንደር ነጋ ሆነ ለሰደት እና ለተለያዩ ችግሮች የተዳረጉት ቤተሰቦቻቸውን በሞራል እና በገንዘብ በመታደግ በአሰር ላይ የሚገኙት ጋዜጠኞች የከፈሉት መሰዋትነት ከንቱ አልመሆኑን ለአገዛዙ ጭምር በተግባር ማሳየት እንደሚገባቸው በርካቶች ይመክራሉ።

Ethiopian nationals in DC express stance for humanity before politics

As the Oromo protests increase in depth and size across Oromia, Ethiopian nationals in the Washington-DC metropolitan area staged a peaceful demonstration on December 9, 2015, in front of the U.S. State Department in Washington, DC, to appeal to the U.S. government to intervene and stop the ongoing human rights violations against Oromo nationals in Ethiopia.

The protesters were chanting slogans in Afan Oromo, Amharic and English to denounce the killings of Oromo students by the Ethiopian government’s Federal police in Oromia. Oromo students in particular, and the Oromo public in general, have been protesting, since April 2014, against the Addis Ababa Master Plan, which, they say, legitimizes the illegal land-grabbing by rich “investors” affiliated with the minority government of Ethiopia against the disenfranchised and poor Oromo farmers.  Recent maneuvers by Ethiopian government to revive and put the Master Plan into effect have escalated the protests with implications for all nationals in Ethiopia.

Mr. Obang Metho, Executive Director of the SMNE (Solidarity Movement for a New Ethiopia), a prominent activist and human rights defender joined the protest in Washington DC. below is his speech at the event.

ፕ/ር ብርሃኑ ነጋ ባለፈው ግንቦት ወር ተካሂዶ በነበረው ምርጫ እንዲሳተፉ ጥሪ ቀርቦላቸው እንደነበር አና ጎሜዝ ተናገሩ

ሚስ አና ጎሜዝ ይህን የተናገሩት ባለፈው ሳምንት ተዘጋጅቶ በነበረው ስብሰባ ላይ ነው። መንግስት በአንድ በኩል ፕ/ር ብርሃኑን ሽብረተኛ ይላቸዋል፤ በሌላ በኩል ደግሞ ወደ አገር ተመልሶ በምርጫው እንዲሳተፍ መልእክት እንዳስተላልፍላቸው ጠይቀውኝ ነበር፣ ያሉት አና ጎሜዝ፣ መልእከቱን ማድረሳቸውንና ፕሮፌሰሩ መሰረታዊ የሚባሉት ጥያቄዎች ከተሟሉ በምርጫው ለመሳተፍ ዝግጁ መሆናቸውን መልስ እንደሰጧቸው ተናግረዋል። ይሁን እንጅ አሉ ባለስልጣኑዋ፣ መመለስ አለባቸው የተባሉት መሰረታዊ ጥያቄዎች ባለመመለሳቸው ኢህዴግ ምርጫውን 100 በመቶ አሸንፍኩ በማለት አስደምሞናል ብለዋል።

ሚስ አና የሽምግልና ጥያቄው የቀረበላቸው እርሳቸው የአፍሪካና ካረቢያን አገራት የፓርላማ አባላት ስብሰባ ለመካፈል ወደ አዲስ አበባ ባቀኑበት ወቅት ነው። ኢሳት በወቅቱ ዘገባውን ያቀረበ ቢሆንም፣ ጥያቄው በአንድ የአውሮፓ ዲፕሎማት መቅረቡን ከመግለጽ ውጭ የዲፕሎማቷን ስም አልጠቀሰም ነበር።

የአዲስ አበባ ዩኒቨርሲቲ ተማሪዎች በስፋት ተቃዉሟቸውን እያሰሙ ነው። በወያኔ ግፈኛ ታጣቂዎች በጎንደር እና በኦሮሚያ በግፍ ለተገደሉ ወገኖቻችን ሃዘናቸውን በመግለጽ፣ እህቶቻችንም ጥቅር በመልበስ፣ በካፌቴሪያ ምሳ አንበላም ብለው ብይኮት አደርገዋል።

እንቅስቃሴ ሰላማዊ በሆነ መንገድ ወደ አዲስ አበባ እየገባ ነው።  እንቅስቃሴው በኦሮሞ ተማሪዎች በማስተር ፕላኑ ዙሪያ ቢጀመርም፣ መልኩን በስፋት ቀይሮ፣ አሁን የሁሉም ዜጎች እንቅቃሴና ሆኗል። ለመሰረታዊ የመብት፣ የነጻነት የእኩልነትና የዲሞክራስ ጥያቄ ሆኗል።

በኦሮሚያ የተለያዩ ቦታዎች እየተደረጉ ያሉ እጅግ በጣም ብዙ እንቅስቃሴዎች እንደተጠበቁ፣ በተመሳሳይ ሁኔታ በሃረር ከተማ (ሃረሬ ክልል)፣ በዲላ ( ደቡብ ክልል፣ ጌዶ ዞን ዋና ከተማ) እንዲሁም በአዋሳ (የደቡብ ክልል ዋና ከተማ) ተቃዉሞዎች ተደረገዋል።
በተለይም በአዲስ አበባ ህይ ስኩሎችን በቅርብ ይቀላቀላሉ ተብሎ ይጠበቃል።

በገዛ አፈ-ሙዙ መቃብሩን የሚቆፍር የሽንፈትን ጽዋ ይጎነጫል ! ከሰማያዊ ፓርቲ ብሔራዊ ምክር ቤት የተሰጠ መግለጫ

ካለፉት ሁለት ዓመታት ጀምሮ የአዲስ አበባ ከተማንና ዙሪያን ለማከለል ከወጣው የማስተር ፕላን ጋር በተያያዘ፤ ገቢራዊነትና ሃሳቡን የተቃወሙ የኦሮሞ ተወላጆች እና የዕቅዱ ተቃዋሚዎች፣ የተለያዩ ዩኒቨርሲቲ፣ ኮሌጆች እና የሁለተኛ ደረጃ ትምህርት ቤት ተማሪዎች እንዲሁም የየከተማዎቹ ነዋሪዎች ላይ የኃይል እርምጃ እየተወሰደ እንዳለ የአደባባይ ሀቅ ነው፡፡

ዜጎች እያሰሙት ያለውን ተቃውሞና የሃሳብ ልዩነት በኃይልና በጠብ-መንጃ ለመመለስ የተደረገውም አግባብነትና ኃላፊነት የጎደለው ጭፍን ተግባር እንደሆነ የሰማያዊ ፓርቲ ብሔራዊ ምክር ቤት በጽኑ ያምናል፡፡ ከዚህም በተጨማሪ፣ መቶ-በመቶ ሁሉንም ተቋማትና መንግሥታዊ መዋቅሮች በጠቅላላ እንደልቡ የሚያዘውና ያሻውን የሚፈጽመው የኢህአዲግ መራሹ ኃይል፣ ልማትንና እድገትን በኃይልና በጉልበት እፈጽማለሁ እንዲሁም አስፈጽማለሁ ብሎ መነሳቱም መሠረታዊ የእብሪት ተግባር መሆኑም መላው የኢትዮጵያ ሕዝብ አሳምሮ ያውቀዋል፡፡

በተለይም ደግሞ፣ ኢህአዲግ መራሹ መንግሥት በኢትዮጵያ ምድር ላይና በኢትዮጵያውያን ላይ የተከለው የጎሳ ፌዴራሊዝም ችግር ምን ያህል አስከፊ እንደሆነና ውጤቱም የዜጎችን ሞት፣ እስራት፣ ስደት፣ የንብረት ውድመትና የትምህርት መስተጓጎል ማስከተል እንደሆነ ታይቶበታል፡፡ በመሆኑም፣ የአዲስ አበባ ዙሪያ ነዋሪዎችም ሆኑ በሌሎች አካባቢዎች የሚኖሩ ኢትዮጵያውያን የሚፈልጉት ልማትም ሆነ እድገት በ“እኔ አውቅልሃለሁ” ባዩ የኢህአዲግ አንባገነናዊ ልማትና የጎሳ ፌዴራሊዝም ሳይሆን፣ በሕዝብ-ለሕዝብ-ከሕዝብ ፍላጎትና ስምምነት ላይ የተመሠረተን ልማትና እድገት ብቻ እንደሆነ መታወቅ አለበት፡፡

ከዚህ ዓላማና ግብ ውጪ የሚተገበር ማንኛውም የልማት ዕቅድና የከተማ ማካለልም ሁሉ የኢህአዲግ መራሹ መንግሥት አንባገነናዊ አስተዳደር ሁነኛ መገለጫ በመሆኑ አጥብቀን እንቃወመዋለን፡፡ በተከሰተው ብሔራዊ ቀውስና ችግር ዙሪያም በቀጥታ ለችግሩ ተጋላጭ ከሆኑት ዜጎች ጋር ሆነ ችግሩ በዋነኛነት ከሚያሳስባቸው የአዲስ አበባ ከተማና ዙሪያ ነዋሪዎች እንዲሁም ከተለያዩ ተቋማት ተማሪዎች ጋር ባስቸኳይ ውይይትና ንግግር እንዲደረግ እያሳሰብን፤ አንባገነኑ የኢህአዲግ መንግሥት እየተከተለው ያለውን የዜጎችን ጥያቄ በኃይልና በጉልበት ለማፈን ከሚያደርገው ፀረ-ዲሞክራሲያዊ ድርጊቱ እንዲቆጠብ እንጠይቃለን፡፡

በተመሳሳይ መልኩም፣ በጎንደር ከተማ በሚገኘው ማረሚያ ቤት ላይ ተከስቶ የነበረውን የእሳት ቃጠሎን ተከትሎ ኢህአዲግ መራሹ መንግሥት የተነሳውን የእሳት ቃጠሎ በማጥፋት፤ በሕግ ቁጥጥር ሥር የሚገኙትን ዜጎች ሕይወትና ደሕንነት ለመታደግ መሯሯጥ ሲገባው፣ ሕይወታቸውን ከቃጠሎው ለማዳንና ለሞከሩት ዜጎች የጥይት እሩምታ ምላሽ ሰጥቷል፡፡

ከዚህ መንግሥታዊ ተግባርና ቸልተኝነት ተነስተን እንደምንረዳው ከሆነ፣ አገዛዙ ለማንኛውም ዜጋና አገራዊ ጉዳይ የሚሰጠው ምላሽ ከጠብ-መንዣና ከጉልበት የማይዘል መሆኑን በግልጽ አስመስክሯል፡፡ ይህንንም መሰሉን ኢ-ሰብአዊና ኢ-መንግሥታዊ ተግባር የሰማያዊ ፓርቲ ብሔራዊ ምክር ቤት በቸልታ እንደማይመለከተው ለመላው የኢትዮጵያ ሕዝብ ለመግለጽ ይገደዳል፡፡
የሰማያዊ ፓርቲ ብሔራዊ ምክር ቤትም መንግሥት የሚፈጽማቸውን ኃላፊነት የጎደላቸው ተገባራት እስኪያቆሙ ድረስ፣ አንባገነናዊው ሥርዓት የሚፈጸመው የሕገ-አራዊት ተግባራት እስካለቆሙ ድረስ፣ ሕጋዊና ሰላማዊ ትግላችንን አጠናክረን እንቀጥላለን፡፡

ከዚህም በተጨማሪ፣ ኢህአዲግ መራሹ መንግሥት የአዲስ አበባ ዙሪያ ማስተር ፕላንን በኃይል ለመተግበር ሲባል ስለሞቱት፣ ስለታፈሱት፣ ስለተሰደዱትና ስለተሰወሩት ዜጎች ጉዳይ የሚያጣራና በጎንደርም ከተማ በሚገኘው ማረሚያ ቤት ስለተከሰተው የእሳት ቃጠሎና ከርሱም ጋር ተያይዞም ስለተፈፀመው የጅምላ-ፍጅት ጉዳይ የሚያጣሩ ገለልተኛ የሆኑ አጣሪና አካል ተቋቁመው ስለተፈጠረው ዘግናኝና ኢ-ሰብአዊ ተግባር መላው የኢትዮጵያ ሕዝብ ትክክለኛውን መረጃ እንዲያገኝ እና ወንጀለኞችም ለፍረድ እንዲቀርቡ መደረግ አለበት፡፡

ይህ ሳይሆን ቀርቶ፣ ኢህአዲግ መራሹ መንግሥት በያዘው የእብሪት መንገድ የሚገፋ ከሆነ የገዛ መቃብሩን በገዛ አፈ-ሙዙ እየቆፈረ እንደሆነም እየገለጽን፤ አጥፍቶ-ጠፊው ኢህአዲግም ሆነ ኢህአዲግአውያን አጀንዳቸውን በኃይል እናስፈጽማለን ብለው የቁም ሕልም ሲያልሙ፣ በቁማቸውም እንደሚቀበሩ ሊያውቁት ይገባል፡፡

Honorable chair, and distinguished members of the European parliament
Ladies and Gentlemen:

Allow me to first express my sincere condolences to the families of the victims, to the People of France and the European Community in general for the most recent senseless and barbaric terrorist crime committed against innocent people in Paris on the evening of November 6. In my view, such acts are not only contrary to the basic norms of civilized behavior and devoid of rudimentary moral principles, they can never be an acceptable instrument to achieve any objective, no matter how noble the cause.

Madam Chair,

Let me also thank you for giving me this opportunity to share my thoughts about the current situation in Ethiopia and its potential implications for the stability of the Horn of Africa.

Madam Chair,

Currently, the livelihood and peace of the people in the horn of Africa and its surrounding region are in a very precarious condition. This situation is caused by long simmering conflicts and crises. Among the openly known major crises are:
  • The havoc being created by the terrorist group Al-Shabaab
  • The conflict in Southern Sudan
  • The Ethio-Eritrean no-war, no-peace stand off
  • The increasing and incessant migration of the youth
  • The exposure of people to recurrent famine
Even as the international community and the people of the region make efforts to manage some of these crises, close observers of the situation see more latent internal dynamics in some of the major countries of the region that can perpetuate and worsen these crises.

The current situation in Syria and Libya demonstrates the consequences of ignoring the underlying causes and drivers of instability for a long time while only focusing on the symptoms as episodes of bursts of crises in societies that are dominated by dictatorial and sectarian regimes. Crises in such situations can easily degenerate into a conflict between narrow-based repressive regimes and simmering extreme societal forces that harbor uncompromising religious or ethnic dispositions. We all know now in conflicts like this, the search for a durable solution becomes extremely difficult as the internal middle ground and moderate forces would be supplanted by extreme forces. As an Ethiopian, I would like to focus the attention of this audience and the international community in general on the internal conditions of Ethiopia which are the sources of instability and civil strife with impending grave consequences to the peace and stability of the country and the region.

Ethiopia was a Monarchy until 1974. The inability of the monarchy to effect desperately needed reforms led to the 1974 popular apprising. From 1974 to 1991 the country was ruled by a military junta called Dergue that refused to find a peaceful negotiated solution to the country’s various problems and conflicts choosing instead brute force to deal with essentially manageable political problems. As a result the country went through a traumatic experience of civil wars in different parts of the country. The single minority ethnic-based Tigray Peoples Liberation Front (TPLF) that later took power after the Dergue has been in power for the past 24 years. Since 1991, the country is ruled as a one-party state under a facade of multi-party system. Ethiopians are once again faced with a regime that is led by a group of people who deny them basic human and political rights and who are determined to block a democratic process. In addition to denying people their fundamental freedoms, the regime is determined to perpetuate it’s monopoly of political power in order to transfer the country’s economic resources to a handful of people from a minority ethnic group and those politically connected to the ruling party. For illustration purposes I will enumerate below only five of the major manifestations of the tyrannical rule of the narrow-based TPLF/EPDRF regime in order to help you appreciate why the people of Ethiopia from all major ethnic and religious groups have started to resist it in an open rebellion:
  1. Ethiopians are suffering under an entrenched ethnic minority rule: The TPLF ethnocratic regime, under the guise of a coalition known as the Ethiopian People’s Revolutionary Democratic Front (EPRDF), controls all aspects of life in the country by installing its ethnic representatives as heads of major institutions across the entire state apparatus. Ethiopians and international observers including those who bend backwards to “apologize” for the regime know very well that ethnic Tigrayans who are members of the TPLF control the army, security apparatus, telecoms , foreign affairs, and other nerve centers of the Ethiopian state machinery. The TPLF party pits different ethnic and religious groups against one another simply to perpetuate its minority rule and monopoly on resources. The regime has no respect for religious freedom. It has created havoc in both the Orthodox Christian church and the Muslim mosques by interfering in the internal administration of purely religious institutions through its political cadres. Religious leaders who resist this interference are exiled (as the Orthodox Christian leaders) and imprisoned (as the Muslim community leaders). Ethnic minority domination is damaging the harmony of the people. In a diverse multi-ethnic and multi-religious country like Ethiopia, the harmony of the people is essential for their peaceful co-existence. When a handful of elites from a single minority ethnic group control political power, economic resources and social institutions of a country; it’s a sure thing that a disenfranchised and powerless majority will use all means at its disposal to be free. In the case of my country, Ethiopia, unless something is done by all stakeholders, and very soon, the struggle for freedom may take the country and the region to civil strife, instability, and even worse scenarios.
  1. Ethiopians are subjected to oppression with impunity: In the last twenty four years, the people have been appealing to the regime to respect the fundamental political and civil liberties of the citizenry. The response by the government has been more repression and more violence. Today, there is no independent media and freedom of expression to speak of in the country due to the wide spread practice of jailing and forcing publishers and reporters in to exile. Today, there are no functioning independent political parties due to the practice of systematic disruption of their normal day-to-day activities, jailing of opposition leaders or forcing them out of their country. Currently, major prisons in Ethiopia are filled with hundreds of well-known political, civic organization and religious leaders as well as journalists under trumped-up terrorism charges. These prisoners are tortured to falsely confess and incriminate themselves and their colleagues. Victims of the regime have no recourse to justice since the judiciary is made subservient to the political manipulation of the ruling TPLF/EPRDF Coalition.
Independent media is not tolerated in Ethiopia. The International Federation of Journalists has declared the regime to be one of the worst offenders of press freedom. Television, Internet, and major print media are owned and operated by the government. The state is the only Internet Service Provider and uses Chinese, Italian and British Internet hacking and intercepting technology vendors that are contracted to spy, trap and intimidate the regime’s critics and opponents not only at home but abroad including in Europe and the US. The regime also spends precious resources on signal jamming technology to stop the free flow of satellite and short wave radio broadcasts from abroad. Foreign based and independently operated radio and TV broadcasts by the Ethiopian Diaspora such as Ethiopian Satellite Television and Radio are jammed on regular basis as are broadcasts in Ethiopian languages by Voice of America and Deutsche Welle Radio.
  1. The livelihood of Ethiopians is at the mercy of the corrupt economic grip of the regime: Like in all totalitarian regimes, the Ethiopian government owns all land in the country, including urban land, and thus through land allocation determines who builds residential and commercial real estate in towns and cities. The industrial and service sector of the economy is also heavily controlled by the state. What is left of the state’s economic holdings is dominated by the Endowment Fund for the Rehabilitation of Tigray (EFFORT), a conglomerate serving as a front economic organization for the ruling TPLF party while other allied parties engage in relatively smaller but equally corrupt and disruptive activities in their domain regions. Key beneficiaries from this economy are the well placed military and political leaders and their cronies while the millions of ruling party members and the alarmingly expanding security personnel get the crumbs left from the ruling elites. Urban poverty as well as income inequality has been increasing dramatically and the relatively small “middle class” is all but wiped out through a policy induced inflation. What we have in urban Ethiopia now is a small fabulously wealthy and corrupt class of government and ruling party officials along with their crony “business partners” on the one hand, and the great majority of the destitute urban population on the other. While these corrupt elites send roughly 3 billion dollars a year in the form of capital flight (partly money sent from western taxpayers in the form of foreign aid) the honest and unconnected business people see their businesses slowly die for lack of capital and foreign exchange as well as corruption induced red tape. The inability to generate jobs for the urban population including those who supposedly graduate from universities along with the suffocating political environment is one of the main reasons for the massive influx of migrants from Ethiopia to all corners of the world including Europe.
  1. Despite the regime’s claims to political legitimacy through its “developmental” achievements, particularly in the rural economy where over 80% of the population reside (which by the way has always been supported by dubious and manufactured statistics, and unfortunately uncritically endorsed by western governments and institutions), the economy’s deep structural weaknesses and the failed economic policies pursued by the regime over the past 24 years are now exposed for all to see by the tragic ongoing famine in the country. An economic policy centered around a suffocating land and agrarian policy whose primary objective is control of the peasantry and leaves no room for human creativity and imagination, combined with drought has led to the potential starvation of over 15 million Ethiopians unless the west urgently delivers massive food aid. According to recent media reports, (of course denied by the regime) children have already started dying in some of the affected regions.
Madam Chair,

As you well know, drought does not kill people, bad policy and unaccountable governance does. As the Nobel laureate Amartya Sen in his study of famines around the world amply demonstrated, people die of starvation in periods of drought in countries that are not free, where there is no free media and where there is no government accountable to the public. During the 2005 elections, the only period where there was a meaningful political debate in the country, the party I belonged to then, the CUD, warned against the futility of the ADLI policy pursued by the ruling party. Our argument was that the rural population, whose means of livelihood stems from an increasingly unsustainable traditional small holder farming whose land size and fertility of land is diminishing every year owing to a suffocating land policy that provides no security of tenure along with demographic pressure and environmentally unsustainable practices cannot support the population in periods of environmental distress. We argued instead for a revision of the land policy as well as a deliberate policy to transform the agricultural economy. We also suggested that no government that sees its people starve to death on its watch deserve to be in power even for a day. Of course, this ruling party never listens to anything that it feels would loosen its stranglehold over political power. What is sickening to watch in this most tragic period in our country is the total incompetence and irresponsible nature of the regime in its response to this tragedy. More interested in saving face rather than saving lives, the regime is still in denial about the human suffering that is caused by the famine declaring that they have everything under control and don’t even need outside help to avert an incoming disaster. “We are food self-sufficient” declared the Prime Minister only a few months ago. Even worse, it is forcing people to contribute money to the tune of 300 million birr to celebrate the 35th anniversary of the founding of one of the parties in the ruling coalition after spending an inordinate amount of money earlier in the year to celebrate the birth day of the real ruling party the TPLF. The sheer obliviousness of the regime and their complete detachment from reality is manifested in a recent interview by an official who proudly informs its subjects on local radio that the government is now building a number of luxury villas (with swimming pools and all) costing an average of 25 million birr per villa to house retiring government officials. This, Madam chair, is happening in a country where 15 million of its citizens are facing death from starvation and in one of the supposed miracle economies of the continent!
  1. Ethiopians have given up on elections as they have become meaningless rituals: There have been five national elections under the TPLF. The first election in 1995 resulted in 3 opposition members being elected to a parliament that has a total of 548 MPs. In the second election of 2000, the number for the opposition members rose to 27. In the 2005 general election, the only election that was meaningfully contested, which was monitored by the Carter Center, European Union (led by you, Madam Gomes) and other observers, Ethiopians turned out in a record numbers and voted for their representatives. The results were rigged; and when voters protested the blatant usurpation of their power peacefully, they were gunned down in broad daylight (the government’s official count was 193 dead). Following this election, opposition party leaders, (including myself, as you know) civic society leaders, journalists and ordinary citizens were thrown in jail for almost two years along with some 40,000 young people deemed to be opponents of the regime. The government appointed election commission ruled the ruling party a winner. In 2010, in the fourth national election, only 1 opposition member was able to slip in to the parliament. In the most recent election that was held in May 2015, the regime claimed to have won 100% of the parliamentary seats. No outside observers other than from the African Union were allowed to monitor the election. The paradox here is that, in a nation where a very large majority of the population opposes the government, no single member of the opposition is elected to the parliament. In short, the so-called multi-party system and democracy paraded by the regime to hoodwink the international community is a mockery of a democratic system as we know it. The Obama administration’s cynical and disgraceful attempt to render legitimacy to its temporary military ally against Al Shabaab in Somalia, will not alter the illegitimacy of the regime one bit in the eyes of the Ethiopian people, in the same way as putting a lipstick on a pig will not alter the nature of the pig.
Currently, despite their deep desire to lead a peaceful life, the existence of the Ethiopian people is almost on the verge of total collapse because of the low intensity rebellions and resistance bursting in various parts of the country. These rebellions are caused none other than by the tyrannical rule of the ethnocratic regime that is shattering the social fabric of the country. The predicament the Ethiopian people find themselves today is not unique in history. People in many countries, who were living under similar conditions have rightfully revolted against tyranny and are now living examples of peaceful and stable democracies.

This universal truth and natural response of the Ethiopian people against their oppressors is best captured by the founding fathers of one of the Western democracies; the American Declaration of Independence from Great Britain, it says:

“We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness – That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed, – That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness.”

Unless otherwise one maintains an inherently racist belief that we Ethiopians or Africans in general are less of human to deserve or possess this “natural endowment,” these words ring true today for the people of Ethiopia who are rising against an egregious tyrant as they were over two hundred years ago to the people of the 13 Colonies.

Madam Chair,

At this critical juncture, to facilitate the Ethiopian people’s struggle with able, responsible and effective leadership, the democratic forces in the country are coalescing under the newly formed United Movement for the Salvation of Ethiopia through Democracy (UMSED) as a beginning towards the formation of a broad movement for democracy in Ethiopia. It is not lost on the part of these democratic forces that one of the potential obstacles on the road to the Ethiopian people’s struggle for freedom and democracy is the international community’s multifaceted collaboration with the TPLF led government with cruel indifference to the prevailing corrupt and repressive political as well as the abysmal economic conditions in the country.

Following their new goal of making inroads into Africa, some countries have become major financiers of the TPLF repressive regime. This may be an expected behavior from these governments, given the nature of their political systems. However, the West’s support for the rogue dictatorial regime in Ethiopia is inconsistent with the values of freedom, justice, and democracy the West practices at home and its vital importance for a stable world order. The West led by the US has understandably declared terrorism as a menace to global peace while in a typical short-term calculus have also decided to consider dictatorial and sectarian regimes like that of Ethiopia to be “allies” in its anti-terrorism effort. As a result, the West has made the Ethiopian regime a beneficiary of its substantial financial, political, diplomatic and even military support directly emboldening it to continue its human rights abuse and repression of its own people with impunity. This policy on the part of the Western countries is short sighted, not constructive and certainly immoral.

Once again, I would like to emphasize that establishing and entrenching the Ethiopian regime by force on very narrow ethnic and exclusionary line is one of the main causes of instability in the region. Such a regime driven by its constant desire to monopolize the political power and resources of the country for a narrow-group interest and its deep insecurity is internally in continuous conflict with its citizens composed of different ethnic and religious groups. To perpetuate its rule beyond the already intolerably long 24 years, the regime continues to use scorch-earth military expeditions in the Ogaden region to the east and occasional incursions into Kenyan territory pursuing resisters from the Oromia region. Human rights groups have many times reported that ethnic minorities in the Gambella, Omo and Afar regions are being displaced from their fertile farm lands to make way for new landlords from abroad and the regime’s ethnically affiliated retired military officers. This has triggered armed resistance in these regions. The regime has also continued to pit different ethnic groups against the Amharic speaking people in the south and western parts of the country thereby driving them out from places where they have lived for generations. As the recent and ongoing bloody conflict in Northern Gonder shows, the Amhara region is in an almost open and armed rebellion. As we speak Universities in Oromia region are looking like combat zones as the government uses brute force to suppress the peaceful demands of students to stop land grab in Addis Ababa and surrounding regions.

As the international community is well aware, the regime is also externally locked in constant conflict with Eritrea in the north. This is the reason why the TPLF/EPDRF government has one of the biggest standing armies in Sub-Saharan Africa thus spending large portion of the poor country’s budget on the military while the danger of famine and lack of resources for basic needs of its population are always lurking around. While this is the true reason for the TPLF regime to build an army that is beyond the country’s legitimate security needs, it cynically uses a fraction of this army in international peace keeping missions in order to get acquiescence from the West for its nefarious repression at home as well as use these missions as a source of hard currency income for its corrupt highest military brass. Recently, the Ethiopian government is even seen scheming to leverage its security cooperation with the West, hopefully in vain, for extending its repressive hand abroad by invoking the legitimate rebellion and resistance of Ethiopians as a terrorist act. The truth is that the Ethiopian people’s resistance is a very disciplined and well organized struggle that is focused only on a political goal of making Ethiopia a democratic country either by forcing the government to come to the table for a peaceful resolution or removing it if the government persists in blocking the natural right of the Ethiopian people for self-government. The people’s resistance movement is also very much aware of its responsibilities for the Ethiopian people, the people of the region and the international community. It is a resistance movement which is informed from the rich multi-ethnic and multi-religious tradition of Ethiopian history, international laws, morality, and norms.

In conclusion, I strongly believe that the sure and least expensive way to avert a pending crises in the largest country in the Horn of Africa is to change the political situation in Ethiopia from the narrow-based repressive and corrupt regime of TPLF/EPDRF to that of an all-inclusive and broad-based transitional order that can lead towards a truly democratic political dispensation, stability and peace in the country and consequently in the region. The TPLF/EPDRF regime must be pressured to accept this transition, and very soon, unless it wishes to lead the county and itself into unfathomably catastrophic conditions of strife and conflict in Ethiopia.

Towards this goal, I appeal to this august body, the European parliament, and of the international community to stand in solidarity with the Ethiopian people and make all possible efforts to avert the impending conflict in Ethiopia by advocating and working for broad-based and all-inclusive transitional government instead of emboldening the tyrannical and sectarian dictatorship of TPLF/EPDRF for short term gains that is neither durable nor sustainable. If you can’t help our people’s aspirations for liberty and to be ruled by a government of their choice, please, please, don’t support and finance their tormentors!

Madam Chair,

I am here to tell you in no uncertain terms that the people of Ethiopia are simply tired of this situation and will rather fight for their freedom by whatever means necessary than accept to live under such a brutalizing tyranny in the 21st Century.

It is only by having a broad based national reconciliation process, an all-inclusive transitional process, and a real and meaningful democratization of Ethiopia that the specter of conflict, instability and, yes, terrorism can be averted effectively and durably. It is only through such policy shift on the part of the European, American and other powers that lasting stability can be achieved in one of the most volatile regions of the world. Anything less, will surely serve the destabilization of Ethiopia with catastrophic consequences of turning the Horn of Africa into a hot bed of conflict, terrorism, and a plethora of human suffering and tragedies including massive forced migration.

But, Madam Chair, time is of the essence here. It is much easier to avert a catastrophe if you catch it before it happens. I believe that is the painful lesson we should be learning from Syria!!
